Le tour Day 3 #MurduHuy

Stage 3 – 170km from Antwerpen to the famous classics climb of the savagely steep Mur du Huy, this was certainly a stage on paper at least that suited me.

A fairly flat start with a gentle breeze. Hot again, the mercury touching 30c so lots of liquid was taken onboard. We made great progress with long stints on the front by Mel, Simon and myself. With the stage being backloaded, we had 3 fairly steep cat 4 climbs to contend with plus a thunder, lightning, rain and hail shower. Not forgetting the finish leg and lung busting cat 3 crawl up the Mur – ‘wall’ in French

With the stage finish being at the top it was a chance to stretch my legs, once a racer always a racer. The 1.3km climb is brutal and must be taken at tempo for the first half then there is only one way to take the 19% section, which is actually 24% on the bend, full gas and a 500m max effort to the line.

I rolled down to give my team mates a big shout of encouragement and then went to have another go on the steep bend for sadistic and photographic reasons, stopping at the hairpin for an image for the blog on the way down 2nd time around.

It was a great day out on the bike, however as I type this on our 1 hour coach transfer, my thoughts immediately turn to tomorrows 221km longest stage which also passes through 7 sectors with 15km of tough cobbles or pave as it’s known.

Wish us luck!
